Libraries are essential gateways to knowledge and culture. Yet in today’s digital world, they face significant barriers. To shine a light on these challenges, and explore solutions, we invite you to join us on Wednesday 24 September, 15:00-16:00 CEST for an online event where we will examine the legal obstacles standing in the way of digital lending and discuss policy solutions for empowering libraries in the digital environment.
Unlike physical books, digital books cannot be lent under fair and consistent conditions. The absence of a clear legal framework for e-lending at both the EU and Member State makes it difficult for libraries to carry out their public mission.
During the event, our panel of experts will explore the available policy solutions to ensure that libraries can fulfil their public service mission in the digital age:
- Konrad Gliściński (Jagiellonian University Kraków / Centrum Cyfrowe) will present findings from his recent study on e-books and secure digital lending in European libraries, commissioned by Knowledge Rights 21.
- Martin Kretschmer (University of Glagow) will preview a study by the CREATe Centre commissioned by KR21, which will be released in October. It focusses on an analysis of eLending markets under competition law, identifying potentially abusive practices.
- Teresa Nobre (Legal Director, COMMUNIA) will highlight unfair licensing practices in the library sector and presenting COMMUNIA’s policy recommendations.
The panel will be moderated by Peter Routhier from the Internet Archive and will conclude with an open Q&A—your chance to engage directly with our panel.
