The Commission has put copyright back on the menu. This is a chance to remove longstanding issues, but will the initiative address all of them?

Join COMMUNIA on Wednesday, 7 October, at 15:00 CEST for a special online salon to explore that question. We will share our first assessment of the recently opened public consultation and discuss the changes needed to support research, public-interest AI and the knowledge institutions on which both depend.

Building on the call for evidence before the summer break, the consultation addresses four areas: copyright and generative AI; online piracy of time-sensitive copyright-protected content; the use in the EU of sound recordings by nationals of non-EU countries; and copyright and research. The salon will concentrate on generative AI and research, where reform could make a significant difference to how knowledge is accessed, shared and used.

For COMMUNIA, meaningful reform requires a broader view. A harmonised research exception and an EU-wide secondary publication right would help researchers use knowledge and share their findings openly. But reform must also tackle unfair licensing conditions and uncertainty around liability. At the same time, the debate on generative AI must account for the pressures facing cultural heritage institutions and free knowledge projects such as Wikipedia. Sustaining these pillars of the public information ecosystem is essential to ensuring that high-quality knowledge remains available to everyone.

We will also use the salon to launch a new campaign website setting out five fixes to EU copyright law, concrete changes we want the Commission to include in its initiative.

Our speakers will be:

  • Teresa Nobre, Legal Director of COMMUNIA;
  • Paul Keller, Policy Director at Open Future and President of COMMUNIA;
  • Brigitte Vézina, Director of Policy and Open Culture at Creative Commons; and
  • Dimitar Zagorski, Policy Director at Wikimedia Europe

Register now to join us in discussing what is on the table, what is missing and how this initiative can deliver better conditions for research and access to knowledge.
